Ohio Criminal Law Guide
Understanding the Ohio criminal justice system is the first step in building an effective defense.
Facing Criminal Charges in Ohio? Know What You're Up Against.
Ohio divides crimes into infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies—each with serious consequences. Whether it's a traffic ticket or a felony charge, understanding the stakes is the first step in building your defense.
Infractions
Minor violations like traffic tickets. Usually just a fine—no jail time.
Misdemeanors
Crimes like petty theft or simple assault. Penalties can include up to 180 days in jail and $1,000 in fines—and a permanent record.
Felonies
The most serious charges—ranging from drug crimes to violent offenses. Penalties start at six months and can reach life in prison or even the death penalty.
